Scientific Name – Acacia dealbata Link Synonim – Acacia decurrens var. dealbata (Link) F. v. Muell., Racosperma dealbatum (Link) Pedley Common name(s) – mimosa, acacia, aromo, silver wattles, mimose. Distribution and Habitat – native to southeastern Australia (indigenous in Shire of Yarra Ranges, Victoria, Tasmania), is naturalized in New Zealand, western North America, Madagascar, Japan and Chile. Description – evergreen small tree, 15 m tall, conical crown. Bark browbish black, moderately fissured at the base of old trunks. Twigs pubescent. Leaves alternate, bi-pinnate, 6-12 cm long, 10-25 pairs of pinnae and 17-50 pairs of leaflets; leaflets almost sessile, oblong. Inflorescences axillary racems or terminal panicles, yellow, fragrant flower. Flowering in January-April. Fruit pods, narrowly oblong, straight or slightly curved, 3-8 cm long. Seeds ellipsoid, black. Acacia dealbata subsp. dealbata – leaves 5-14 cm long; pinnae 1.5-5.5 cm long; pinnules 1.5-6 mm long, 19-68 pairs. Capitul 22-42 flowered, pale yellow to yellow or sometimes bright yellow. Tree to 30 m high, occasionally a shrub. Acacia dealbata subsp. subalpine – leaves 1.5-8.5 cm long; pinnae 0.5-2.5 cm long; pinnules 0.7-4 mm long, 10-37 pairs. Capitul 13-24 flowered, yellow to bright yellow. Shrub or tree to 5 m high. Growth rate – fast-growing. Tolerances – extremely drought tolerant once established. Requirements – soil fertile, well-drained, neutral to acid; grows well on poor soil. Management – mulch in autumn. Propagation – by seeds. 82% germination after 5 years storage at 18-22̊C. Seeds should be scarified prior to sowing. Seed that floats is not viable.
