Scientific name - Nees Acanthus Montanus

Synonyms - Cheilopsis montana, Acanthus barteri.

Popular names -  mountain thistle, african mountain acanthus, inyinyi ogwu.

Distribution and Habitat - a native of tropical Africa.

Description - herbaceous perennial, stems erect, branched 1.5 m height. Leaves simple, opposite, oblong, lamina lanceolata, penatifida or winding-lobata, margin toothed with short spines, top caudate-acuminata. Zygomorfe flowers, grouped in terminal spikes 20-25 cm long, calyx tube, four sepals unequal, upper sepals oblong, 3-3.5 cm, the lower 2.5-3 cm, corolla lobes 5, white-pink, 3.5-4.5 cm tube 0.5-0.7 cm long, stamens 4; inferior ovary, bracts obovata. Loculicida fruit capsule, small seeds numerous.

Growth rate - fast.

Tolerances - tolerate semi-shade.

Requirements - Soil binon-drained, sunny exhibitions.

Management -

Propagation - by seeds and seedlings. Seed is sown at the soil surface, apply a layer of mulch.

Properties and Uses - plant is used in central African countries to treat various diseases such as rheumatism, hypertension and skin infections.
