Scientific Name - Acer negundo

Synonyms -

Popular names - artar american, boxelder.

Distribution and Habitat - originating in North America.

Description - deciduu tree, dioecious, up to 15 feet tall. Trunk erect, greyish-brown bark, branches pendent, green to brown stems. Expansive and irregular crown. Imparipenat Leaves compound, 3-7 leaflets opposite, ovate, toothed edges, short stem, terminal leaflet is the trilobite. Red male flowers gathered in bouquets, green female flowers gathered in bunches pendula. Bloom in April-May, before leaf. Disamara fruit, green, with wings of about 4 cm long, RECURVE to the axis of the fruit.

Growth rate - fast. Longevity 80-150 years.

Tolerant - frost and drought.

Requirements - prefer acidic or alkaline soils, well-drained, semi-in exhibitionsshadow.

Management - trimming needs to develop a strong structure.

Propagation - by seeds.

Cultivars - 'Variegatum' leaves with paler margins.

Properties and Uses - a species used in ornamental parks and gardens.

Wood has no commercial value.

Curious - was introduced in Europe in 1688.
