Scientific Name - Astrantia major L.

Synonyms - Astrantia biebersteinii (Trautv.)

Popular names - stevie de munte, Zapoca, astranzia, masterwort.

Distribution and Habitat - originally from Europe, from northern Spain to the eastern Russian mountain forests and subalpine increases from 100-2000 m altitude.

Description - herbaceous perennial. Stem erect, 30-90 cm long. Basal leaves and stems, 1-2 dm palmate lamina-side, 8-12 cm, with five lobes. Umbele flowers arranged in 2-3 cm diameter, involucre of bracts linear-spatulate, with 3-5 main veins green sepa lesiniforme, 3-5 times longer than wide, white-pink petals, the flower stalk 5-8 mm . Blooms in May-July. Fruit achenes, ellipsoidal, 6.2 x 2.6 mm, pale yellow. 2n = 28

Tolerant - do not tolerate heat and drought.

Requirements - moist soils rich in humus, well-draineds, shaded exhibitions.

Propagation - by seeds (spring) or split bushes (autumn).

Garden Partners - Stachys Byzantine, Lobelia siphilitica, Lamium maculatum, Geranium endressii, Alchemilla mollis.
