Scientific Name - Callistemon citrinus Stapf

Synonyms - Callistemon lanceolatus

Popular names - red bottle-brush.

Distribution and Habitat - originating in Eastern Australia.

Description - shrub or small tree, 8 m high. Leaves simple, opposite, blade elliptic, pinnately veined, pubescent on the margins. Flowers in terminal cylindrical spikes; corolla of 5 red petals falling soon after the flower opens; numerous red stamens, 2.5-3 cm long. Bloom in June. Fruit subglobose capsule, sessile, woody, 5-7 mm long. Pollinated by birds.

Tolerant - do not tolerate temperatures below-5ĚŠ C.

Requirements - fertile, well-drained soils in sunny places.

Management - supports trimming.

Propagate - by seeds or by cuttings.

Curiosity & ndAsh, genus name derives from Greek and means beautiful stamens.

When crushed, the leaves emit a lemon-like scent.
