Scientific Name - Elaeagnus pungens

Synonyms -

Popular names - elaeagnus Thorny, thorny silverberry, nawashiro gumi.

Distribution and Habitat - a native of Japan.

Description - evergreen shrub, thorny stems, curved, spines 5 cm long stems covered with brown scales. Leaves simple, alternate, entire,, oblong-lanceolate, dark green on top and brown on the bottom. Small flowers, leaves clustered at the armpit, fragrant. Blooms in September-October. Fruit 1-1.5 cm long, with persistent calyx. Seeds ellipsoid, top round, 14-16 x 4-5 mm, light brown. 2n = 28
