Scientific name - Frangula Alnus Mill.

Synonyms - Rhamnus frangula, Frangula vulgaris, Frangula pentaphylla.

Popular names - common frangola, Alno nero.

Distribution and Habitat - a species native to Europe and the Caucasus, rise in the bushes, edges of rivers, lakes and peat lands, wetlands, from the plains up to 1300 m altitude.

Description - 1-4 m tall shrub species. Bark gray, with white lenticels. Branches slender, erect. Toment buds with white. Leaves alternate, lamina or subrotunda obovata, tip acute, margin entire and slightly wavy, glossy deep green on top, lighter green and opaque on the underside, petiole reddish, 1 cm long, pinnate arcuate ribs. Flowers in axillary CIME 2-10 flowers, worn thin and short stems, petals cordiforme, whitish green, 5 stamens. Blooms from May to August. Global drupa fruit, 6-8 mm diameter,green to red at maturity.

Properties and Uses - bark has medicinal properties.
