Scientific Name - Nerium oleander

Synonyms - Nerium indicum

Popular names - leandru, adelfa, whole plant, olander, common oleander.

Distribution and Habitat - originally from Mediterranean regions, often seen as species cultivated. Boschetele grows naturally in the near watercourses, at 000-300 m altitude.

Description - evergreen shrub, branched from the base, 1-4 m tall, bark gray, smooth. Leaves 6-20 x 1.3-3.5 cm, arranged in vertical every three or opposite, simple, lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, entire, acute coriacee, median rib parallel track with side ribs. Flowers 3-4 cm in diameter, actinomorfe, bisexual, pentamere in depth corimbiforme terminals, five SEPA, linear lanceolate, pubescent; Corola infundibuliforma, red or pink petals 5 patents, 5 stamens united at the petalolor. Blooms in April-August. Fruit 6-15 cm follicles, erect. 2n = 22

Growth rate - fast. Longevity - 100.

Tolerances - tolerate drought and marine aerosols, do not tolerate frost.

Requirements - prefer shows sunny and well-drained land.

Management - can be applied to cutting maintenance or inspection. Pruning is applied after the early spring when danger of frost has passed.

Propagation - by cuttings and marcotaj.

Cultivars - 'roseum Plenum' with double flowers, dark pink to purple.

'Carneum Plenum' with smaller leaves, variegata with white double flowers, pink.

Properties and Uses - cultivated as ornamental species in parks and gardens or in pots on terraces.

Curiosity - all parts of plant are poisonous to humans but also animals.

Funzele contain oleandrin that by ingestion becauseza vomit and heart dysfunction.

Smoke emanating from burning branches is poisonous.

Oleandrin products used against mice.

The generic name derives from 'nerion' - the name given by the Greek Dioscorides 'naros' = current branch as it grows near water courses.
