Scientific name - Sophora japonica L.

Synonyms - Styphonolobium japonicum (L.) Schott.

Popular names - salcam japonez, japanese pagoda tree, Schnurbaum, sofora del Giappone, acacia del Japon.

Distribution and Habitat - a native of eastern Asia.

Description - deciduu tree, 15-30 m tall. Bark gray-brown, fissured. Branches without thorns, dark green in youth. Leaves alternate, imparipenate, 15-25 cm long; stipele obsolete; leaflets alternate or opposite, 7-17, elliptic-ovate to lanceolate, 1.5-6 x 1-2.5 cm, acute or obtuse, mucronate, sparsely pubescent galbre or on underside. Flowers in terminal panicule, 15-35 cm long, calyx 3-4 mm long, stamens 10, the ovary superior. Blooms in May-August. Indehiscenta pod fruit, narrowed between seeds, 3-12 cm x 7-12 mm, glabra, 1-8 seeds. Seeds ellipsoidal global 8 x 4-5 mm, yellow-brown.
