Scientific name - Tribulus terrestris L.

Synonyms --

Popular names - the old woman's teeth, Scale horse abrojos, Bullhead, bur nut, Mexican sandbur, Gokhru, Gokshura.

Distribution and Habitat - originally from India, China, Vietnam, Europe and South Africa.

Description - herbaceous annual, prostrata, with branches 80 cm long. Paripenat-compound leaves, 4-8 folio, oblong folio, 4.12 x 4 mm. Sepa 2-4 mm long. Petals 3.6 mm long. Stigma pyramidal-elongated. Blooms in May-September. Fruit capsule, 4-8 mm long, with 2 divergent spine 3.8 mm long and 2 short spine 1-4 mm long. Seeds 2-4.

Properties and Uses - mature and dried fruit were placed in the pharmacopoeia of medicinal plants in India, in 2002, as a diuretic.

Frunzele have astringent properties, diuretic, aphrodisiac, tonic and depurative.

The fruits are astringent properties, anti-inflammatory, tonic, diuretic and aphrodisiac.

The seeds are astringent and diuretic properties and sometimes help fertilization.
